Various Types of Plug Valves and Their Uses

A plug valve is a cylinder or cone-shaped valve that may be rotated inside the valve body to regulate fluid flow. One or more hollow passages are typically installed horizontally in plug valves to facilitate easy flow through the valve while it is open. The two-port plug valve is a highly popular valve having an open as well as a closed state. The valve's two ports are generally on opposing sides, with one passageway running from inbound to outbound and the stem and handle on top. A quarter-turn valve is also used in a plug valve, which is beneficial when rapid and frequent action is required. Flanged, hub type, or butt weld valve ends are all options.

Types of Plug Valve and Applications:

Although there are plenty of varieties of plug valves, there are four main types, each with its own set of advantages.

1.   Lubricated Plug Valve:

A lubricated valve, as the name implies, utilises a lubricant consisting of base oil and a viscosity improver (such as amorphous or fumed silica) sprayed under pressure between the plug face and body seat to minimise friction and seal ports. Valve manufacturers often advocate using a lubricant that is compatible with the process fluid, and valves must frequently be resealed after just a few cycles, if not every cycle. They're typically utilised in applications with few operations since they're considered a high-maintenance plug valve. Lubricated plug valves work effectively in operations that use fluids that transport moderately abrasive particles, such as filthy upstream applications, gas pipeline systems that require bypass valves, and valve station and kicker valve blow-down valves.

2.   Non-Lubricated Plug Valve:

The tapered or cone form of this plug valve functions as a wedge, pressing a polymeric sleeve against the body cavity. The plugging mechanism and the body have less friction when the sleeve is used. Non-lubricated plug valves are frequently used instead of lubricated ones in applications where little maintenance is required, such as sulphur and hydrogen fluoride special services, or where liquids might be trapped or hardened and potentially jam the valve. Non-lubricated plug valves, on the other hand, are restricted by the temperature and chemical compatibility of the non-metallic materials used in their construction.

Common types of non-lubricated plug valves are as follows:

     Lift-type plug valve

     Elastomer sleeved plug valve

     Fully lined plug valve

3.   Eccentric Plug Valve:

The half plug design of this plug valve is beneficial for situations that require a higher seating force with little friction from the open to the closed state. Torque-seated valves also provide better shut-off capability. Eccentric plug valves are used to regulate and isolate a wide range of fluids, including clean and unclean water, sewage, sludge and slurries, air, and other services.

4.   Expanding Plug Valve:

This complicated plug valve is made up of many components that allow it to mechanically expand and operate as a real double block and bleed valve in one. The plug valve has a rotating mechanism that shields both seals from the flow channel by rotating between open and closed states. There is no contact between the body and the seals during rotation, and when the valve is closed, the slips expand onto the body seat to protect the seals from wear and abrasion. They're frequently utilised to avoid product contamination in instances where double isolation isn't required.
